We stayed at the White Orchid Inn while on our romantic weekend. Located at 1104 S. Oceanshore Blvd., you only have to cross the street, and you are on the beach. The Inn provides beach gear so you don’t need to bring your own. The Inn also provides bikes if you would like to ride around and take in the sights. Enjoy homemade breakfast in the quaint lobby where you feel like you are a guest in someone’s home. After a day on the beach return to the lobby for a glass of wine and an appetizer before heading out for the night.

This retreat is adults only so leave the kids at home. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool. We went in January so the cozy bathrobes the Inn supplied came in handy. Of course, we wore them down to the heated mineral pool at night. Moreover, there is nothing like lounging in a warm pool at night looking up at the stars.

The Spa

While here pamper yourself at the spa. Numerous treatments are available. But we opted for one of their couples’ massages. The spa also offers couples’ yoga and astrology readings.

When we visited Flagler Beach Florida, the ocean water was too cold for swimming, but we did book a picnic lunch complete with wine through the spa services. Also offered are poolside fresh fruits, wine, and cheese or champagne and chocolate dipped strawberries. The possibilities for romance are endless.

The Rooms

The Room with it All

This is definitely a romantic retreat and not your typical hotel. Although the Inn is small, with only 9 guest suites, it leaves each guest feeling special. Consequently, most rooms have large two person Jacuzzi baths. In addition, all rooms include luxurious spa robes, a king or queen size bed, mini fridge, wine glasses with a cork screw, internet, movie and music channels, and walk in shower for two. Above all, you can even order wine to be delivered to your room ahead of time from the Inn’s wine cellar.

We stayed in The Room with it All. It had a king size bed with Mombasa curtains around the posts, large Jacuzzi tub, large shower area. Another feature we liked is that the toilet was in a separate room from the shower. French doors opened onto a balcony where we could catch ocean views and enjoy looking through a magazine or sipping some wine.

We also spent some time at Tortugas while in Flagler Beach Florida. With outdoor seating and fire pits at the tables, this was a great venue for an evening in January. At the time, my husband and I were into these spicy lemonade drinks we invented. Our server accommodated us happily and even tried the drink herself after work. The food menu provides a wide variety from sushi to burgers so you will definitely find something to your liking. When we visited they had live music.

Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park

If you enjoy history, this park is for you. You can get to it by car from the White Orchid Inn in about 15 minutes.

Plantation ruins

This park stands on the site of an old plantation where sugar cane, cotton, rice, and indigo grew. The plantation was destroyed in 1836 during the Second Seminole War. You can take a self guided tour through these ruins which are listed in the National Register of Historic Sites. The ruins include crumbling foundation of the plantation house, slave cabins, sugar mill, several wells, a spring house, and the land from the plantation itself.

In addition to the ruins, the park offers several other activities. Rent a kayak and paddle down Bulow Creek, a recognized State Canoe Trail. On the other hand, you can bring your bike and cycle or hike along the 6.8 mile Bulow Trail. If you like fishing, bring your equipment and cast a line. Just be sure to check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission first so you follow regulations. Maybe you want to try your hand at geocaching. Gamble Rogers is located between the coast and the Intracoastal waterway. The park sits on an island where you can fish, swim, build sand castles or picnic. For something less adventurous, visit the butterfly garden. Learn their crucial role in plant reproduction and learn about local flora.

The park also offers camping , hiking, bicycling, and tours.

If you are staying for more than a few days in the Flagler Beach area, you might want to venture further north on A1A to Saint Augustine, the oldest city in the United States.
